About Gus

Gus began his coaching career in 1981 in Glencoe High School boys basketball, serving five years as an assistant coach and helping the Crimson Tide capture their first ever state championship in 1983. Over the next eight years, he held positions as head varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Oregon City, Estacada, Rex Putnam, and Clackamas high schools.

Among his many accomplishments as an assistant coach, he helped Putnam win the league championship and get to the State Final Four in 1990. He assisted in getting Clackamas to a second-place finish in the 1994 state championships. As a head coach, he took Estacada to the state playoffs in 1989.

He guided Clackamas High boys basketball from 1994 to 2005. His teams earned league championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003, and he is the only coach in Clackamas history to win three consecutive league titles. Clackamas advanced to the State Championships in 9 of 11 years under his leadership.

Clackamas was in the state playoffs in 1997, 1998, and 2004. They made the “Sweet Sixteen” in 1995, 1999, 2002, and 2003, the “Elite Eight” in 2001, and finished third in state in 2003. In 2001 and 2002, he was named “Three Rivers League Coach of the Year.” Gus' record at Clackamas High is 212 and 88 (71%).

Gus has been camp director of Clackamas Cage Camps for over 20 years and has traveled throughout the Northwest doing clinics and working with coaches of all levels.

Testimonials

Tamie Woginrich

Head Coach, Newberg Girls Basketball

If you want your player to be taught good basketball fundamentals, then send them to Steven Gustovich. He has worked with our team before preforming mini clinics. Our players enjoy his style of teaching and they are noticeably better when he is done working with them. He is one of a handful of people in Oregon whom I would send my players to for skill development.

Sydney Azorr

CHS Class of 2014, WOU Player

Over the past six years with Gus, I have participated in several of his basketball camps and clinics where my skills and fundamentals have been greatly improved. His knowledge of the game and skills necessary to be a successful basketball player are second to none. I truly don’t think I would have earned a scholarship to play basketball in college without his help and training throughout the years.

Coach Gustovich, you are an excellent coach for both boys and girls at all levels. Most players these days lack basic fundamentals that are needed to play at the higher levels. Your knowledge of the game and ability to identify and coach fundamentals are the best I have ever seen. Most importantly, you inspire trust in the parents by constantly demonstrating your genuine concern for the kids you coach through selflessly volunteering your time to help kids grow. You are a great example for my kids to be around. Thank you for your help now and in the future.
